Minor Update - Playtest Version 1.21


Happy 2023!

Just doing a minor update for the game. This update is mostly to fix a lot of typos, though it does rework one or two systems and tweak an action or two. Importantly, I've added the OGL to the end of the document. There's been a lot of unsettling rumors about future plans for the OGL, but I've been meaning to include it for a while so I'm just adding it as it currently exists, and bridges will be crossed when we get to them! Anyway, the next piece of content planned is a fourth-level dungeon called the The Revel of Blott, but it still has a little way to go before I can publish.

I deactivated the Trespasser RPG Twitter account. I wasn't using it much, and, well, I have my other reasons lol.

Looking for Writers & Artists

I'm also searching for talented folks to design more dungeons, adventure modules, monsters, etc. for the game. I want to have at least a small collection of prewritten content before I try to crowdfund a print run, so if you are an interested creator for hire, reach out to me on the Discord channel or at trespassergame@gmail.com.

Change Log 1.21

  • General
    • Cleaned up a lot of language and typos.
    • Changed a few  4E terms and phrases to avoid potential conflict with WotC. Notably:
      • Minor actions renamed swift actions.
      • Blasts renamed spreadsBursts renamed surges.
      • There may be more changes coming in this department as I continue to go over the OGL/SRD and hammer down which terms are okay and which aren't.
  • Art
    • Peasant Chapter art changed.
    • Spellcasting Chapter art changed.
  • Exploration
    • Travel system reworked. It is functionally similar to the previous system but now based on travel hours instead of abstract points.
  • Adventurers
    • Ventures
      • Find a Magic Item has been removed as a repeatable venture that grants 100 xp. It was a negligible source of xp anyway, and magic items are their own reward.
      • After the First Day, the new adventurers now gain xp for everything they did.
        • They also still complete the one-time venture "Survive the First Day" for 100 xp, guaranteeing they'll have enough xp to advance to first level even if they didn't loot any treasure, fully explore the dungeon or slay any terrible foes.
        • Peasants who are not chosen as adventurers still get no xp and remain peasants.
    • Classes
      • Thief
        • Thief now has the Fundamentals class feature.
  • Themes
    • Defense
      • Actions that regained spent armor dice have been removed or changed.
      • Added Warding Blow, a basic action that doubles the next armor die you spend this round.
      • Changed the mighty action Steel Yourselves. It now grants you an emanation that doubles the party's armor dice rolls.
    • Flames
      • Added Dragon Snap, a special action that causes burning and potential damage in a surge centered upon an enemy.
    • Frost
      • Certain actions no longer create difficult terrain.
    • Earth
      • Added Pillarfall, a special action that drops three obstacles that each deal damage to adjacent creatures.
    • Swiftness
      • Changed special action Dizzying Dance to now confer delirious instead of unguarded.
  • Spellcasting
    • Tables have been tweaked.
    • Missing spell summaries and descriptions added.
  • Monsters
    • Large, huge, and massive monsters can now ignore a certain amount of forced movement. This is a change I've been meaning to include for a long time. Limits the usefulness of bleed on very large creatures, as to be expected.
  • Treasure
    • Random Treasure generation tweaked.
  • Legal
    • The OGL has been added to the end of the book.
